My first brush with longevity enthusiasts occurred while researching this piece on the Singularity and Ray Kurzweil. Rather famously, Kurzweil pops a ton of pills in the hopes of extending his life and one day looks to download his brain into a computer and achieve some level of immortality.
The aging field, however, has remained on the fringes of technology. Some people like the idea of a blood boy. Most do not.
Today, I broke a story on a woman who is trying to advance the aging field in new ways and to make this type of technology more mainstream. To pull this off, she’s turned to dogs.
Celine Halioua has started a company called Loyal, which aims to test compounds that can increase the quality of life for dogs and extend their lifespans. Should these efforts work, Halioua figures that people - and the FDA - will be more inclined to to invest time, money and faith in the longevity field. Much more in the piece for Bloomberg Businessweek here.
Just FYI - Liz Parrish from BioViva is also doing life extension on dogs. At the moment they are doing telomere length testing, but I think they are moving into phase 0 trials for telomerase extension gene therapy this year
